Ask these people about my sabbatical

Yesterday I wrote about how I respond when someone asks me, “How’s your sabbatical?” I ended that post musing on how perhaps the best people to answer that question are other people. Here’s a list of people you can ask. (OK, maybe not bombard them with questions. Pray for them instead. If you do ask, please ask sparingly and with discernment.)

I would ask these people how they think my sabbatical is going:

1. My wife. Am I doing what I should be doing on sabbatical? Am I spending more time in prayer, Bible study, and journaling? Am I helping out more around the house? Am spending more time with her? Am I getting more rest and, consequently, am I more patient and loving?

2. My kids. Do they see their dad more during this sabbatical? (Though they may be more reticent to talk than my wife.) Will they be sad to see my sabbatical end because they will miss the additional time they had with their father?

3. My partners in ministry. I might ask them how things are different while I’m not teaching, leading, preaching, administrating, counseling, or mentoring. But I would also also ask them how things are different when I’m not nagging, criticizing, controlling, pestering, or hindering them either!

4. My Lord. Since every moment is a gift from God, I would ask Him to help me during my sabbatical. I do ask Him to grant that I grow in the grace and knowledge of the Savior. Oh how I need it!

Perhaps these individuals could better say how my sabbatical is going.
