Merry Christmas to me

sweater refashionNote: this post is a little diversion from family news. It’s a peek into a recent sewing project.
For a while, I have been wanting a new sweater. I’m a little particular when it comes to buying clothes. It has to fulfill my requirements of size (to fit a petite me), quality (poorly constructed garments annoy me) and price (the cheaper the better). Did I also forget to mention I’m a little picky for style and the fact that little k hates when I shop for clothes? So really, I don’t buy clothes very often and hope that I can rework what I’ve got.

I have also been reading about people who have creatively refashioned old/thrifted/used clothing items into beautiful garments. I found a charcoal gray, lambswool pullover and decided to try to create a sweater that would meet my standards. Then I made a mistake. I washed the sweater to shrink it but it came out too small. I even cut the front to see if I could make it work but it was a lot of wishful thinking.

Providentially, there was a cashmere scarf, in the same charcoal color, sitting around. I think it was orphaned after a meeting at our house last winter. I cut it up to use for cuffs on the sleeves and to add length to the body of the sweater. I did cringe a little when I started cutting but I consoled myself by reasoning that it was unclaimed and badly moth-eaten. Add some buttons and a bit of embellishment using scraps and voila! For the curious, I posted a couple pictures here. Merry Christmas to me.

Yeah, I made the flower with some scraps from the scarf. I had thought about making a bunch but thought that “less is more” applies here.
