whispers of discontent

This week I’ve talked to a few people in totally different life stages and situations that are unhappy with their circumstances. It’s hard to see others like that. What’s mildly surprising is that it’s easy to start to think, “Hey, maybe I’m not all that happy myself.” The whispers of discontent can be quite persuasive.

What’s not surprising at all is that I have been studying 1 Peter in my womens’ bible study. It’s a letter addressed to Christians that were suffering cruel persecution for their faith. Thankfully Peter wrote and and not me because he says things like, “greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible,” “fervently love one another,” and “be of sound judgment and sober spirit.” And while I can hardly call my circumstances suffering, it’s refreshing to my soul to hear such emphatically stated commands that can shout down those whispers.
